Your support is critical to keeping Florida's government open & transparent!
For over 30 Years, the Florida First Amendment Foundation (FAF) has kept Sunshine in the State of Florida. As the state's principal advocate for open government, FAF monitors all proposed legislation that impacts your access to open government and public records, aiding the media in their watchdog role and enabling citizens & civic groups to become more effective participants in their government.
As the Florida Legislature continues its relentless attack on your right to know, the First Amendment Foundation monitors each bill, including 74 such bills this year alone. More than 1,100 exemptions to the Sunshine Law are making it harder and more expensive for citizens to hold government accountable. Last year, 12 percent of the FL Legislature's bills created new exemptions to our constitutional right of access.
Each year FAF publishes the Government in the Sunshine Manual, and provides training to public officials charged with execution of those laws. FAF's leadership in the fight for open government has been recognized not just in Florida but at the national and international levels. FAF's purpose is to protect and advance the public's constitutional right to open government by providing education and training, legal aid and information services. Funding is based on the voluntary contributions of our members and various organizations and concerned individuals.
Founded as a non-profit organization in 1984 by The Florida Press Association, the Florida Society of Newspapers Editors and the Florida Association of Broadcasters to ensure that public commitment and progress in the areas of free speech, free press, and open government do not become checked and diluted during Florida's changing times.
